Tipping in Nepal
Customary: 10%–15%. 10% is standard at restaurants. Trekking guides are tipped by the day, separately.
At restaurants
What is customary: A share of the bill, at any size
Worked example
On a रू10,000.00 bill, 10% is रू1,000.00, so you would hand over रू11,000.00.
Tour guides
On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about रू1,000.00 per person.
On a paid tour, a flat रू1,500.00 per person per day, whatever it cost.
Trekking is tipped by the day, not by the trip, and porters and guides get different rates. Pooled at the end of the trek.
The money
Nepal uses the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Today 1 GBP is 205.58 NPR.
