Tipping in Tanzania
Customary: 10%. 10% at restaurants. Guides and porters are tipped by the day, separately.
At restaurants
What is customary: A share of the bill, at any size
Worked example
On a TSh100,000.00 bill, 10% is TSh10,000.00, so you would hand over TSh110,000.00.
Tour guides
On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about TSh20,000.00 per person.
On a paid tour, a flat TSh25,000.00 per person per day, whatever it cost.
Safari and Kilimanjaro are tipped by the day, per guest, and pooled at the end — the trip's price does not change it.
The money
Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Today 1 USD is 2,640.71 TZS.
