Tipping in United States
Customary: 15%–25%. 18–20% at restaurants. Staff are paid on the assumption you tip.
At restaurants
What is customary: A share of the bill, at any size
Worked example
On a $50.00 bill, 15% is $7.50, so you would hand over $57.50.
Tour guides
On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about $20.00 per person.
On a paid tour, 15%–20% of the price on top.
Guiding is a tipped job here on the same terms as waiting tables — the tip is most of the wage, on a free tour and a paid one alike.
The money
United States uses the US Dollar (USD).
