Tipping in South Africa

Customary: 10%–15%. 10–15% at restaurants. Car guards who watch your parked car get a few rand too.

At restaurants

What is customary: A share of the bill, at any size

Worked example

On a R1,000.00 bill, 10% is R100.00, so you would hand over R1,100.00.

Tour guides

On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about R150.00 per person.

On a paid tour, 10% of the price on top.

Expected. On safari the ranger and the tracker are tipped separately, by the day.
