Tipping in Bhutan

Customary: 10%. Not customary. Tours are all-inclusive and staff are paid.

At restaurants

What is customary: Not expected — welcome, but nobody is counting

Worked example

On a BTN5,000.00 bill, 10% is BTN500.00, so you would hand over BTN5,500.00.

Tour guides

On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about BTN1,000.00 per person.

On a paid tour, a flat BTN2,000.00 per person per day, whatever it cost.

Guide and driver are tipped at the end of the trip, by the day, and it is the one cost the daily fee does not cover.

The money

Bhutan uses the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). Today 1 GBP is 128.49 BTN.
