Tipping in Australia
Customary: 5%–10%. Not expected — staff earn a full wage. Something for a special meal.
At restaurants
What is customary: Not expected — welcome, but nobody is counting
Worked example
On a A$50.00 bill, 5% is A$2.50, so you would hand over A$52.50.
Tour guides
On a “free” walking tour, the tip is the fare: about A$20.00 per person.
On a paid tour, nothing is expected.
Not expected — wages are high and guiding is a proper job. Free walking tours are the exception.
The money
Australia uses the Australian Dollar (AUD). Today 1 USD is 1.3992 AUD.
